Simone Rebello

Each member of the Creative Team was asked to give 10 fun facts about themselves. Here is what Simone said:

  1. I am very picky over my choice of tambourines and shakers and have about 20 tambourines and 30 shakers to choose from! I like to have everything laid out in exactly the right place on my rig which is why Tim likes to move things around to see how long it takes me to notice!
  2. I have played in some very strange places over the years including in the fountains at Somerset House, on top of the organ loft in Westminster Abbey to heald the arrival of HM The Queen on Commonwealth Day, and on the set of the Cbeebies programme Zingillas!
  3. I live in a converted pub which is over 150 years old. So it has really thick walls which is just as well considering the noise I make with my full percussion set up!
  4. I started out in music on the piano, violin, and recorder and I really wanted to play the flute. I put my name on the list for lessons (I think I am still on the list!) but in the meantime a friend of mine told me she was studying percussion and as it sounded like fun, I thought I would give it a try - and I am really pleased I did!
  5. I studied percussion at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester (where I am currently Director of Percussion and Acting Deputy Head of the School of Wind, Brass, and Percussion). But I nearly didn't make it to my audition all those years ago because I was really ill on that day. It was only because I had already bought my train tickets from London where I lived (that cost about 20p in those days) that I ended up going for the audition.
  6. I am a massive tea drinker (I think it runs in the family as my grandfather worked for Liptons Tea out in India) and one of the most important things on my percussion rig is my tea holder. Which my percussion tech, Rory, bought for me because I kept knocking my tea over.
  7. When I was a child I had a phobia about clowns, balloons, and loud noises! Not ideal when going to my friend's birthday parties. I'm still not keen on clowns and balloons but I have gotten very used to loud noises - which is just as well considering my job!
  8. As a percussionist you are asked to play hundreds of different percussion instruments but also a few things that you may not think of as an 'instrument' as such. I think the weirdest thing for me was the sunroof of a Ford Fiesta!
  9. I can't cook to save my life! All my family are amazing cooks and I struggle to even boil an egg.
  10. I love the water and I like to live near it if I can. My current house overlooks the canal and my previous one had a brook running through the back garden. The first house I bought however, had an underground river running underneath it - this was not quite what I expected but probably had something to do with the fact that the house started to slide distinctly downwards.....
